Following the voluntary worldwide withdrawal of the medicinal product Vioxx (rofecoxib) by Merck & Co., Inc., the Medicines Authority has collaborated with the product's local distributors A.M. Mangion Ltd to ensure that all the necessary action is taken.

A.M. Mangion Ltd promptly started to take the necessary measures, the authority said.

Doctors were immediately informed about the withdrawal of Vioxx through electronic means and a letter is also being sent to all local doctors and pharmacists. Vioxx immediately started to be recalled from pharmacies.

The authority recommends that patients taking Vioxx should ask their family doctor to prescribe alternative treatment at their earliest convenience.

Information is available on the authority's website at www.health.gov.mt/mru.
