Two journalists, a photographer and a cartoonist from The Times and The Sunday Times - Ariadne Massa, Herman Grech, Darrin Zammit Lupi and Maurice Tanti Burló - are finalists in the Malta Journalism Awards, the winners of which will be announced on the final night on November 1.
Mr Grech and Ms Massa, together with Lino Bugeja, are finalists in the print journalism category, sponsored by HSBC Bank Malta, while Mr Zammit Lupi, together with René Rossignaud and Michael Ellul, is finalist in the photojournalism category.
The only finalist of the press cartoons category, sponsored by Malta International Airport, is Mr Tanti Burló.
In the sports journalism category, sponsored by Michele Peresso Ltd, the finalists are Mr Bugeja, Robert Cutajar and Christian Micallef.
Charlotte Bonavia, Paul Cachia and Charlot Zahra are the finalists in the e-journalism category, sponsored by HP (Hewlett Packard).
The Broadcasting Authority is sponsoring the broadcast script category, the finalists of which are Roderick J. Agius, Claudette Baldacchino and Julia Farrugia, and broadcast film, where the finalists are Tonio Darmanin and Alvin Scicluna.
In the new category Travel Journalism, sponsored by Emirates, the finalists are Sarah Putin Galea, Mr Scicluna and Corinne Vella.
This year, there are three nominees for the Gold Award, which recognises those who distinguished themselves in a career in journalism and gave a useful contribution in the field. The winner is chosen by a specific committee, presided over by the last former President of the Republic.
The Gold Award is being sponsored by BPC, which has always supported the event.
The number of journalists participating in the contest this year was considered to be high and augured well for the continued growth of the Malta Journalism Awards, Malcolm Naudi, chairman of the Institute of Maltese Journalists, said.
