A total of 122 triple blood bags were donated to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) blood bank last month.

Among the 122 people who donated blood at the SMOM bank in August was Emanuel Caruana, who gave his 90th blood donation towards the end of the month.

SMOM medical director George Buttigieg said there was a group of people who donated blood on a regular basis.

Last month 44 people donated blood for the first time.

More men than women donated blood last month. Dr Buttigieg said this was usual and was probably because men were more likely to take the initiative and also because women had a higher possibility of being anaemic. Last month 100 men and 22 women donated blood at the SMOM blood bank.

Dr Buttigieg said under 18-year-olds could also donate blood but needed parental consent to do so.

Blood donated at the SMOM blood bank is supplied to the National Blood Transfusion Centre.
