Edward Camilleri, a stalwart of the Deloitte & Touche Malta firm, has retired as a partner after 39 years in the profession.
Mr Camilleri's career started when he joined Turquand, Youngs & Co. as an audit assistant in 1965. He qualified as a Certified Accountant in 1972 and in 1984 moved on with two colleagues to set up a new professional practice.
On January 1, 1991, the firm, Camilleri, Cachia & Co., merged with Manduca, Mercieca & Co. which was the Deloitte & Touche member firm for Malta.
In recent years and up to his retirement, Mr Camilleri was the partner responsible for the international business unit within the firm's assurance and advisory section, which provides services principally to international clients. He was also the firm's key contact partner on reorganisation and insolvency matters.
Paul Mercieca, the Deloitte and Touche managing partner, heaped praise on Mr Camilleri: "We remain constantly amazed at Edward's energy and enthusiasm and understand that he would want a change of scene after close to 40 years of operating in large audit firms. His unique and inimitable character as well as his many years of experience will be sorely missed by all of us in the office. We are indeed indebted to him for his sterling contribution in helping us create the firm we are today".
