Two young men from Fgura died in an early morning accident at the entrance to the St Venera tunnels yesterday.

The police said Menrick Yeomans, 20, died on the spot and Luke Cassar, 18, a reserve goalkeeper with Hibernians football club, died on his way to hospital, after their Ford Transit went out of control and crashed into the tunnel wall.

Yeomans was a youth player with Tarxien Rainbows and last year was voted the team's most promising youth player.

The van was being driven by Cassar towards Marsa when the accident happened at around 2.30 a.m.

The damage to the van was so extensive that the two men had to be pulled out by personnel from the Civil Protection Department. Duty Magistrate Anthony Vella appointed traffic expert Yana Micallef Stafrace and other experts to help in the investigation.

The Hamrun district police are investigating.
