EP delegation to meet fishermen

Twenty-five MEPs will be visiting Malta early next year in order to assess the fishing industry's situation.

This was announced yesterday following a meeting of the European People's Party in the European Parliament.

A statement issued on behalf of the EPP said the visit of a delegation from the fisheries committee of the European Parliament was a result of an invitation by Maltese MEP David Casa, who sits on the committee. The delegation will be meeting fishermen, associations and all those involved in the local fishing industry in order to assess the situation and form a more informed opinion about the industry's problems and concerns.

It will also try to seek ways of obtaining more EU assistance for the fishing industry.

The EP delegation will be having talks with Maltese fishing industry authorities.
