Tennis enthusiasts from all over Malta have been visiting the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club, in Paola to watch the Dutch national team of wheelchair tennis players train in preparation for the Paralympics to be held in Athens.
The Dutch Tennis Federation selected Malta in order to have its players train in similar climatic conditions to those expected in Athens during the games.
The Dutch team includes eight of their foremost wheelchair tennis players, such as Robin Ammerlaan and Esther Vergeer, classified first in the world of wheelchair tennis. Other top performers are Eric Stuurman (classified No. 10), Sonja Peters (No. 3), Sharon Walraven (No. 4) and Maaike Smit (No. 7).
Accompanying the team are Aad Zwaan, Dutch national wheelchair tennis coach, Steven Bannick, physiotherapist, and Ton Rietveld, team manager.
The team started training last Friday and is expected to leave for Athens today.
