I refer to the letter The Rehabilitation of Fort St Elmo (August 31). I am greatly offended by the phrase "part of the fort was used literally as a dump by the Valletta Rehabilitation Committee. In this part I could see tons upon tons of debris and old material...".

The material that the writer may have seen was not debris of really "old material", that is old hard stone and lava paving slabs and kerbs among others. We are proud of the fact that over the years we have done everything possible to collect this natural material, which is often thrown away by contractors, other government departments and local councils when they refurbish pavements.

The material is then used regularly in restoring pavements in Valletta, Floriana and the Cottonera. These paving slabs are natural materials that form part of our heritage. They are placed in Fort St Elmo temporarily and are normally used within a short period.

Mr Farrugia should have checked his facts before making his accusations.
