Airport employees claim discrimination
Two airport employees yesterday filed a judicial protest against the government and Malta International Airport plc calling upon respondents to implement two judgments delivered by the Tribunal for the Investigation of Injustices.
Frederick Attard and Joseph Cassar filed a protest against the Prime Minister, the director general of the management and personnel office in the Prime Minister's office and MIA, and held them liable in damages.
The men declared that the tribunal had found in their favour and had ruled that they had sustained an injustice when they were not promoted to executive grades following their applications in 1991.
Both men claimed they had suffered discrimination as Attard was a shop steward and a member of the executive of the port and transport workers' section of the General Workers Union.
Cassar had a post in a political party and was also a GWU member.
The tribunal had recommended that Attard be awarded back-dated promotion to the post of air terminal executive with effect from 1992.
In Cassar's case the tribunal had recommended that he be promoted to safety and security executive with effect from 1991.
However, the two men claimed that respondents had not implemented these recommendations and had persisted in discriminating against them.
Attard and Cassar concluded the protest by calling upon respondents to grant them these promotions and held them liable in damages.
Dr Aron Mifsud Bonnici and Dr Marvic Debarro signed the writ.
