A Total of 2,136 students last month duly filled in their application forms to enter the Junior College of the University of Malta.
Of these, 1,669 plus 66 repeaters are fully qualified to join the college and have already received a letter of acceptance from the college administration; 390 students are doing resits this month, while 11 applications have to be vetted by the Admissions Board.
The total number of applicants is roughly equal to that of last year, however this time round, there are fewer provisional students. These numbers are subject to fluctuation and a drop of between 10-15% is expected once students either opt to join another college or institution or fail the September resit.
The Junior College does not select students, does not apply any numerus clausus and does not impose any restrictions on grades obtained in SEC examinations. As long as the student can present certificates with passes in English Language, Maltese, Mathematics, one Science subject and any other two subjects at SEC level or equivalent, he/she is eligible to join the Junior College.
This year, choice of options is more or less the same as those in the past. However, at A-level, Computing, Physics and Pure Mathematics have registered an increase while demand for A-level Accountancy, Art, Home Economics, Italian, Marketing and Philosophy have lost ground.
At Intermediate level there is a significant increase in the demand for Engineering Drawing and French. There is also an increase in the demand for Marketing and Sociology while numbers for Art, Environmental Science, Geography, Information Technology, Italian, Maltese, Philosophy, Pure Mathematics and Religion have registered a decrease. Overall, the largest drop was registered in Italian, Marketing, Religion and Philosophy.
Students who have received a letter of acceptance are required to pay a refundable fee of Lm10 as caution money at any BoV branch and personally hand in the endorsed Junior College copy at the Junior College administration office, room 103, by Tuesday between 8.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. Failure to submit this copy in time will automatically cancel the letter of acceptance.
Students who decide not to attend the Junior College are requested to complete the withdrawal form by Tuesday. Failure to submit this information may affect the maintenance grant procedure.
