The Armed Forces were called out at sea to fly to hospital a Maltese fisherman who had a large fishing hook embedded in his hand while he was fishing on board the local schooner Giuseppina Madre, yesterday morning.
An AFM Alouette III helicopter, flown by Captain M. Farrugia, was dispatched to the vessel which was some 56 nautical miles northeast of Malta.
The injured fisherman was winched aboard the helicopter and was transferred to St Luke's Hospital for medical treatment.
The AFM's Rescue Co-ordination Centre attends to some 40 medical evacuations from aboard various vessels and locations around the Maltese coastline every year.
An army spokesman said that such rapid intervention by helicopter ensured urgent medical attention that could save lives.
