A 21-year-old man was yesterday jailed for four years after he admitted to breaking into four cars and committing fraud.

Alan Grima, of Cospicua, pleaded guilty to breaking into the cars and damaging them, stealing several items from the cars, fraud, driving a car when his licence was suspended, speeding and relapsing between November 2, 2003 and July 25, 2004.

Magistrate Anthony Vella noted that the courts had given Grima several opportunities to change his ways in the past. The magistrate noted that Grima had filed an early guilty plea but the punishment had to reflect the gravity of the crimes. He ordered that Grima attend a drug rehabilitation programme while serving time and recommended the director of prisons to help Grima attend the programme.

Police Inspectors Anthony Portelli and Noel Cutajar prosecuted.
