The Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment together with project partners BirdLife Malta and Din l-Art Helwa condemned the "cowardly" act of one or more individuals who on Wednesday morning uprooted young trees and caused considerable damage to the Foresta 2000 afforestation project in Mellieha.

The ministry and NGOs said the incident was not the first of its kind. "Since the commencement of the project in 2000, it has been the target of repeated acts of vandalism. Such vandalism is shameful and destroys years of hard work by NGO volunteers and government working hand-in-hand.

"In a country where woodland has been severely depleted by human activity, afforestation projects such as Foresta 2000 are desperately needed to restore a balance with nature," they said.

The ministry, BirdLife and Din l-Art Helwa appealed to anyone with information related to this act of vandalism to contact the police.
