The paving of Mdina's streets is expected to be completed by the middle of next year at a cost of Lm600,000, Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said yesterday while visiting the paving works in the old capital.
A concrete foundation is being laid before the slabs are put in place. The hard stone slabs are imported from Sicily.
Paving works, which had started last May, are being carried out by three contractors in conjunction with ministry workers. The project also includes the laying of 600 new manholes.
The paving is another phase of a project for the embellishment of Mdina. Overhead services cables were laid underground and wires for street lighting were placed in conduits. The remaining cables will be removed in the coming months.
