A delegation from the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) had a meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to discuss the introduction of the eco-tax, which comes into effect tomorrow.

The CMTU expressed its concern over the way this new tax could negatively affect consumers, workers and pensioners. It said that through its representatives on the Retail Price Index board, it would be measuring the impact of this tax over the next few months.

The CMTU urged the government not to allow operators to take advantage of the new tax and increase prices outside the boundaries of the law.
