Senglea's unfinished project

"The original intention was to leave untreated the far end of the bastion wall where one can see the scar from the last world war when part of this bastion was destroyed," Ray Bondin said in his letter (August 21).
On the opposite side of the creek, along Cottonera Wharf where now there is the Casino di Venezia (ex Scamp's Palace), the building had part of it destroyed during the war. Yet, when this palace was repaired, nobody thought of leaving the scar as it was. It was repaired and the casino now looks, as it should, a whole building.
Recently Pinto Stores (Floriana) were also repaired. Why were they not left as they were so as to leave the war scars there for posterity? It is a good thing that Dr Bondin's committee was not around just after the war. They would have had a glut of war-scars from Senglea only. Would they have proposed to leave it as it was so as to show what great destruction war creates?
Dr Bondin said they are waiting to hear from the Waterfront consortium about their plans. Does Dr Bondin know that the cleaning up of the bastions, which are less than 200 metres long, took over one and half years to complete? Could they not get the information they wanted during that period of time? Where is the coordination?
Such blatant excuses are hard to believe. As many would have said in the good old Royal Navy days: "Dr Bondin go tell it to the Marines"!
