Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj, the newly crowned 1,500 metres Olympic champion, was one of four athletes elected yesterday to the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission.

El Guerrouj, Namibian sprinter Frank Fredericks, Czech javelin thrower Jan Zelezny and Egyptian swimmer Rania Elwani were all chosen for a period of eight years and will serve as IOC members during that period.

The four were picked from 30 candidates by 5,787 athletes - 54.5 per cent of all eligible voters.
