Counterfeit Lm2, Lm10 and Lm20 notes are in circulation and people should take precautions when handling notes, police sources said.
A Central Bank of Malta spokesman said there was a phenomenon that counterfeit money tended to become more common in summer, at Christmas time and Easter, when there is a lot of money in circulation.
Two main security features in genuine banknotes are the watermark and the security thread, which are both clearly visible when viewed against the light.
Owners of UV (ultra-violet) money detectors are being urged to look for UV security features in banknotes.
Further information on security features is available on the bank's website, www.centralbankmalta.com, under the currency section.
The possession or use of counterfeit money is a crime punishable at law.
