I am four square behind John A. Consiglio and Victor Pulis (August 3) in their quest to save Fort St Elmo and the De Guiral battery in St Angelo from speculation and vandalism.
I understand that Upper St Elmo is still occupied by the Police Academy and therefore this gem of a historic fortress is safe at least for the time being.
Upper St Elmo, as Mr Consiglio must have meant in his letter, was occupied as from June 14, 1966 by the freshly amalgamated 3/11 Low Air Defence Regiment, RMA (T) under the command of the late Lt Col J. M. Cremona, RMA who served in the Regiment until relieved by Lt Col M. L. Petrocochino RMA (T). The regiment was finally disbanded with effect as from April 1, 1972.
In the beginning of 1966, 1st Battalion KOMR vacated St Francis Ravelin, Floriana and was re-allocated its old pre-second world war barracks at Lower St Elmo, just vacated by 3 LAA Regt. RMA (T) and 1st Battalion KOMR continued to occupy Lower St Elmo until it was similarly disbanded as from April 1, 1972.
Lower St Elmo is now in a shambles.
