The Badminton Association of Malta was recently given the opportunity by the European Badminton Union (EBU) to send two representatives to the EBU Summer School, in Pressbaum, Austria.

This is an annual event which the EBU has regularly organised for the past 23 years. It consists of a week of intensive training designed specifically for Under 19 players.

Martin Andersen and Werner Langthaler ran the EBU Summer School, together with nine other top coaches. The event saw the participation of 54 players from 20 different countries.

Participants trained and resided at the "Sacre Coeur" Sports Complex for the entire duration of the event. The Maltese representatives at the EBU Summer School were 16-year-old Maria Borg, who plays for Essex Shuttles, and Adrian Chetcuti, 18, of Birkirkara Medairco. Both players are key members of Malta's junior squad.

During the EBU Summer School, Borg and Chetcuti received valuable insights into playing technique and tactics under the expert tuition of their respective coaches.

Their presence at the Summer School forms part of a four-year assistance and cooperation project, which the local badminton association has undertaken together with the EBU.

A spokesman for the local association expressed his satisfaction at the performance of the Maltese players at the Summer School, auguring that the knowledge they acquired will serve to further improve their standard of play.
