I refer to Abraham Blackman's letter Racist Ideas (August 10). I believe The Times would be doing a disservice to all democratic principles by not publishing Norman Lowell's articles. In our country's sorry state, where every second of the day draws us closer to the continuum of tragedy, analyses are important, and analyses by realists are even more critical.

Any basic philosophical education will show that the most widespread problems have the most singular source, and Mr Lowell has found that source. It is also very unfounded to call Mr Lowell a racist, because none of his comments has directly addressed a particular race. But the influx of illegal immigrants must be stopped. They are illegal, and they should be treated like any other illegal action.

If Mr Blackman is so keen on hospitalising these immigrants, then by all means, let us give him the opportunity to host them himself when they hit our shores. Mythology has got nothing to do with the argument.

An Europa of the likes Mr Lowell is working for has already existed before, in different eras. And we know about them because of our detailed historical records.

Now if for Mr Blackman, history has become myth, then I suggest a restructuring of history lessons in our schools, so that we may all agree on the meaning of specific words. Because in a country where words often become policy, we should take great care!
