China won the first two gold medals of the Athens Olympics yesterday, when Wang Yifu beat Russia's Mikhail Nestruev with a narrow come-from-behind victory on the final shot of the men's 10-metres air pistol competition.

Earlier, Du Li had taken the Games' first gold by edging another Russian, Lioubov Galkina, in the women's 10m air rifle, with her final shot.

Wang had trailed throughout the 10-shot finals but outscored his Russian rival standing just to his left on the last shot to win with a total of 690.0 points to Nestruev's 689.8.

Nestruev, the European champion who had set an Olympic record in the qualifying round earlier yesterday, claimed the silver medal while compatriot Vladimir Isakov took the bronze.
