Last July the Consumer Affairs Council, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, published a booklet (in Maltese) entitled 'X'Ghandek tkun taf bhala Konsumatur tal-Hut' (What you need to know if you buy fish).
The aim of the booklet is to give consumers useful information on a number of topics namely: how to identify fresh fish; the best time of the year to shop for certain fish; how to clean fish; how to preserve fish; the nutritional value of fish; the herbs used when cooking fish; and the best wine to drink with various fish dishes.
Two well-known cooks also share their views on how best to cook the fish available locally.
The Consumer Affairs Council thanked the sponsors: the EU Delegation in Malta, APS Bank Ltd., Koperattiva tas-Sajd, the Ghaqda Koperattiva Nazzjonali tas-Sajd Ltd., Azzopardi Fisheries and EAN Malta without whose help the booklet could not be published.
Consumers who wish to obtain copies of the booklet may do so from their local council office or directly from the Consumer Affairs Council at 4, Old Mint Street, Valletta. Credit goes to Carmen Delia, chairman of the Consumer Affairs Council, whose idea it was and who saw the project through.
Joe Tanti helped Mrs Delia in compiling the articles in the booklet. While bearing in mind that it is only available in Maltese, if you are interested in having a copy in English, write to me and, as a Consumer Affairs Council member, I will pass on your message to Mrs Delia.
Although currently there are no funds available to produce an English version, should it transpire that there is a demand for an English version, the matter will be looked into.
