Australian Andrew Hoy will not only be trying to defeat the world's top three-day equestrian event riders in his bid to win a record fourth team consecutive gold medal in the competition that starts tomorrow.

Hoy will also be trying to beat his wife Bettina, a two-time German champion and stalwart of her country's eventing team.

In one of the most improbable encounters in Olympic history, the British-based couple will face each other in a head-to-head competition for medals for their respective nations in one of the few sports where men and women are in the same event.
