Provisional tax and social security contributions due by individuals can now be paid online by means of a credit or debit card.

This facility, which is part of the e-Government project, will be extended to company and other types of tax in the future.

To effect payment customers have to access the Inland Revenue Department website (www.ird.gov.mt) and go to the online payment page. The next step is to key in the payment reference, which is printed on the provisional tax payment form, and carry on from there.

The payment reference has been designed to incorporate all the information required for the payment to take place. After one enters the payment reference number the website will display all the details of the payment being effected.

This facility utilises the electronic payment gateway (ePG) implemented by the government which has inbuilt security features that safeguard the confidentiality of the personal information as well as the details of the credit/debit card used for payments. The ePG accepts VISA, Mastercard and Bank of Valletta Cashlink cards.
