Twenty-two illegal immigrants came ashore late last night after being rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta earlier in the day.

The AFM said the migrants were aboard a boat that had stalled and which was spotted by a Maltese fishing vessel some 63 miles to the south east of the island at about midday.

Papa 52, the AFM's most modern patrol boat, was sent out to pick them up.
