The Malta Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprise, GRTU, said yesterday that if the eco-tax was imposed on stocks it would ask its members to approve a resolution not to pay or collect such a tax.
It said the introduction of the proposed eco-tax before the first week of January would be unjust.
The GRTU said its complaints on behalf of importers and retailers of domestic and industrial goods had remained unanswered.
The association said there would be job losses if the tax was introduced without a reduction in taxes and burdens on businesses.
It said that if the government went ahead with its imposition without first reaching an agreement with the social partners, it would be seriously threatening the process which had been embarked upon for the country to be administered according to an agreed social pact.
The proposed eco-contribution had provoked an outcry among both unions and employers, with the government having to postpone its planned August 1 introduction pending talks with the social partners.
