Last among equals - August 10, 2004

It seems Enemalta is sponsoring rally drivers to take part in Triq il-Buttuniera, Marsacala, and its surrounding area. In June of this year, after a good night's sleep, the sound of bulldozers and other heavy machinery replaced my alarm clock at 7 a.m.

To my amazement, I thought to myself, alas, the Malta Transport Authority has finally decided to pay me back my road contribution by surfacing our street.

It was only a matter of minutes before I realised that I was still dreaming.

The very nice contractor informed me that they were digging up the road to lay some cables and I should indicate to him where the water and drainage pipes lay so that he would be extra careful not to damage them.

Well, 20 minutes pass and what do you know, surprise, surprise, no water. Somebody had hit the water pipe.

After a couple of weeks of noise and dust, everything went back to normal, as all the heavy machinery was gone and our lives became somewhat normal again, only to find out that nobody has bothered to resurface the roads that were involved in this operation.

On August 3, the last news I had from the local council of Marsascala was that they were in talks with the Enemalta engineer.

I guess while this high level of communication is taking place, myself, my family and other residents have to make do with the fine dust and other health problems which come with this untimely burden.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention, did you know that the Prime Minister lives just up the road?!

It seems that, after all, his presence is unaffected, hence, we are all equal.
