When the candidature of José Manuel Barroso for the Presidency of the European Commission was put to the vote, 711 votes were cast of which 664 were valid.

Of these, 413 voted in favour and 251 against. There were 44 blank ballots and three spoilt ones.

Mr Barroso has now started consultations with the member state governments which will lead to the selection of the individual members of the Commission. The Maltese government has already let it be known that Dr Joe Borg is its candidate.

At the end of this process there will again be the hearings of the individual commissioners by the European Parliament and if all goes well the Parliament will then vote on whether to approve the new Commission or not.
