It is worth remembering that between the devil and the deep blue sea, there exists an oasis for those like myself who are thoroughly sickened by the behaviour of the two major political parties. The time has come to dump the Nationalist Party because it cannot be allowed to carry on making promises which never materialise. They are now very close to matching the oppressive arrogance of the Labour Party at their worst, in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Both the PN and the MLP need to be told they have lost the trust of the Maltese discerning electorate.
The obvious alternative is the party that was expressly set up to heroically combat an authoritarian corrupt regime which was dangerously drifting uncontrollably towards the sphere of influence of every pariah state in the world.
Alternattiva Demokratika is now happily purged of two of its founders, who chose to revert back to the MLP, now headed by the same Alfred Sant, who was conspicuous by his silence when the two young elements voiced their dissent without any support from him, or any one else for that matter. I say good riddance and good luck to both of them.
Harry Vassallo, chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika, is a man beyond reproach. He is a man of the highest integrity who enjoys the loyal support and respect of all who come into contact with him. Dr Vassallo is ably assisted by a number of people of the highest calibre, Arnold Cassola, Mario Mallia, Stephen Cachia, Ralph Cassar and a few others who are all highly qualified and dedicated to the ideals of Alternattiva Demokratika, that is corruption-free politics and a healthy environment.
These are all people one can trust, they will bring a breath of fresh air to the stale and fetid stench of two old battle worn adversaries, over-burdened with soiled and dirty baggage, which have exhausted any semblance of respectability or credibility.
It is really up to us to break free from the chains of tribal indoctrination. Who can seriously argue that we can carry on with the extreme negativity of the Labour Party, that are prepared to sacrifice the country's interests as long as the party wins brownie points, or so they seem to think?
Or who can seriously stomach another twisted campaign as mounted by the PN, assuring us that the country's finances are in good hands? Bearing in mind Air Malta, Mid-Med Bank, Chambray and the rest of the financial disasters they are totally and squarely responsible for. I have in front of me the 1998 PN electoral programme, Gid - Fiducja - Direzzjoni (Wealth - Trust - Direction). Six years on, out of 10 headings only one came to pass, that is our membership of the European Union. The rest reads like Aesop's fables. Gone are the promises to the service pensioners along with all the empty bombastic tone of the rest of this document.
We now need to urgently curtail these two monoliths by preventing them from grabbing absolute control of the country's destiny. Alternattiva can be relied on to fulfil this role. In so doing they will also enhance and guarantee the desired political stability we all yearn for.
It is up to every free thinking voter, unshackled by years of brain washing, to raise his head over the parapet and vote for a drastic change in the way we play the political game.
As Anne Zammit very rightly said, "mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow".
I have supported Alternattiva Demokratika in the past because I believe they are the key to a saner and more equitable political scenario, which has been deteriorating for far too long already.
We need to call a stop to all the greed and mediocrity of present day politics, we need to support Alternattiva Demokratika.
