The award seeks to confer both national and international recognition on an individual, aged 18 to 40, who exemplifies a spirit of entrepreneurship and citizenship that makes a difference in the community and beyond.

"This award is not only for the people we see in the newspapers every day but very much for our unsung heroes in our local communities who work tirelessly and are never acknowledged, or someone who has overcome a great challenge in their life and is an example to us all," TOYP project leader Karl Farrugia Wismayer said.

Young men and women may be nominated in one of the ten categories for the award:

1. Business, economic and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment;

2. Political, legal and/or governmental affairs;

3. Academic leadership and/or accomplishment;

4. Cultural achievement;

5. Moral and/or environmental leadership;

6. Contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights;

7. Humanitarian and/or voluntary service;

8. Scientific and/or technological development;

9. Personal improvement and/or accomplishment;

10. Medical innovation.

The top Outstanding Young Person of the Year will be awarded a cash prize of Lm1,000 and will in turn be nominated together with all the other finalists to Junior Chamber International's TOYP programme and given the opportunity to be selected as one of the ten outstanding persons of the world honoured during the JCI world congress.
