An average of three tonnes of recyclable material is collected each month from 50 bring-in sites across Malta and Gozo.

WasteServ said this was an encouraging response to its call for waste separation and underlined the public's cooperation with the waste separation scheme. Other bring-in sites are expected to be installed in the coming weeks.

WasteServ said last month's statistics showed that whereas 15,000 kilos of paper were handled from the sites in November, this increased to 39,040 kilos in June. Plastic rose from 4,240 to 12,780 kilos; cans from 2,540 to 6,300 kilos and glass from 6,660 to 15,660 kilos in the same period.

All material deposited in the bring-in sites is collected separately and further treated at the Sant'Antnin Waste Treatment Plant on its way to recycling.

WasteServ said that to complement this encouraging public participation it was doing its utmost to ensure that the whole process, from collection at bring-in sites to deposit at Sant'Antnin and eventually recycling, was as smooth as possible.

Vehicles collecting recyclable materials from the bring-in sites are monitored using the Datatrak system. Spot checks are also carried out regularly on the vehicles to ensure the WasteServ contractor does not default.

Furthermore, since material is sorted manually at Sant' Antnin, any mixing of waste will be evident and will immediately be reported to the main contractor.

"To date all inspections have shown there has been no evidence that vehicles offering services to WasteServ have remixed the waste which householders have responsibly and eagerly separated. Genuine efforts by householders to separate waste will be safeguarded," the company said.

In case of any suspicion of waste from bring-in sites being mixed, one can call free on 8007 2200 and note the vehicle number.
