A draft legal notice aiming to provide a fast track for the registration and permitting of minor waste management activities has been published by the Rural Affairs and Environment Ministry.

Under the newly published Waste Management (Activity Registration) Regulations, people engaged in minor waste management activities would be required to register the activity with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa). The waste management activities which fall within the scope of these regulations will be exempted from the normally required full waste management permit.

Mepa said the legal notice covers three categories of waste management activities - very minor activities which can be carried out without registration, minor activities for which Mepa needs to be notified and waste management activities for which the competent authority needs to be notified and that also require written confirmation by the authority before the activity can be carried out.

Activities falling within the scope of the regulations include the storage of waste, waste transportation and recycling activities.
