FOI council member and FOI Environment Committee chairman Godwin Micallef and FOI executive Kevin Caruana attended a presentation organised by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

George Said and Lara Savona delivered the presentation, which was focused on the collection of statistics on packaging waste and the import and export of waste.

The legislation for the collection of these data falls under the 'New Waste Statistics Regulation,' which came into force at the end of 2002.

The chairman of the meeting, NSO director general Alfred Camilleri, said the NSO has to start collecting data on packaging waste from local enterprises and is therefore undergoing a pilot study, together with interested parties, to define the best methods of how to carry out the collection of this data.

Mr Micallef insisted that there is already a legal notice specifying the data to be collected from industry. He emphasised that, in this context, industry should not be burdened with any other forms requesting more information from local enterprises.

The federation also offered its assistance to formulate a system that co-ordinates the form of data collected from enterprises for NSO's and MEPA's requirements. MEPA were also present at the meeting.
