The Coaching Commission will be organising the first part of the FIBA Young Coaches 2000 Programme. This coaching course will be held locally between August 31 and September 4.
It is being held under the auspices of the Malta Basketball Association (MBA) with the collaboration of the European Association of Basketball Coaches (EABC).
Two EABC coaches, Maurizio Mondoni (Italy) and Laszio Killik (Hungary), will be coming to Malta to conduct the lectures during this course and to assess each participating coach on an individual basis.
Certificates will be handed to all successful applicants at the end of the course which leads to a full youth coaching licence in accordance with the Coaches Manual.
Coaches who currently possess a provisional coaches' licence in any category, are obliged to attend this course. Other prospective coaches who aspire to obtain a coaches' licence for the coming season must also attend. Closing date for applications is July 23.
FISEC Games
Meanwhile, Malta's women's basketball selection have been undergoing their final preparations for the FISEC Games which get underway this evening when the participating athletes, expected to total more than 800, gather at Mellieha for the opening ceremony.
Most of the players in the Maltese squad, under the guidance of Carlo Farrugia who is also the national coach of the senior team that won a gold medal in last year's GSSE, are no newcomers to international competitions having participated in past editions of the FISEC Games as well as in the FIBA Junior Promotion Cup.
The Maltese team, sponsored by Eurosport, have been drawn in the same group as Hungary, France and Spain.
The other group comprises Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Austria. The games will be played at the Corradino Pavilion.
