The Medical Association of Malta has filed a counter-protest in the First Hall of the Civil Court in which it denied it had acted incorrectly with regard to a number of hospital security guards.

The counter-protest was filed in reply to a protest filed against MAM by 15 security guards employed at St Luke's Hospital.

MAM confirmed the contents of its public statement issued following an incident that took place on July 8 at 1 a.m. at the Accident and Emergency Department of the hospital in which two doctors were threatened and assaulted.

The doctors' association reiterated its declaration that at the time of the incident it was other doctors and nurses who had assisted the two attacked doctors.

At no time had the security guards intervened to protect the doctors despite the fact that their assistance had been requested.

In fact, MAM declared that a nurse had called upon the guards for help over a microphone that could easily have been heard by the guards from their position a few metres away from the scene of the incident.

MAM added that prior to calling a press conference it, and its secretary general, had verified the facts of the matter and had interviewed eye witnesses.

The association had always therefore observed ethics and just principles.

The association and its secretary general denied they had acted incorrectly or that they had caused the security guards to suffer irremediable harm.

Dr George Abela and Dr Robert Abela signed the counter-protest.
