The Labour Party's health spokesman condemned the recent attack on two doctors at the Emergency Department of St Luke's Hospital.
In a statement, Michael Farrugia said this was not the first time workers in this and other hospital departments were attacked.
The problem at the Emergency Department, he said, would not be solved merely by the installation of cameras and by having security guards and police officers present.
Patients and their relatives were often frustrated having to wait long hours before being seen by a doctor.
This had been the case for years and there was an urgent need for the department to solve the problem by not exposing medical staff to unnecessary danger.
