The Maltese Labour MEPs have attended a meeting of the European Socialists to nominate Josep Borrell as president of the European Parliament.

The election of the new president will be held at the Strasbourg plenary session on July 20.

John Attard Montalto, Louis Grech and Joseph Muscat approved the nomination of the 57-year old Mr Borrell, who was the Spanish Socialists' main candidate in the last European elections.

In another meeting, the Maltese MEPs also gave their nod to Martin Schultz to head the European Socialists' group in the European Parliament in place of Enrique Baron Crespo.
