The General Workers' Union said it was concerned at the "arbitrary and unilateral" way in which the government was taking important decisions on the country's financial situation.
It said its concern continued to increase recently after it was announced that the European Union had approved a plan proposed by the Maltese government for harsh measures to reduce the budget deficit.
In view of this, the GWU has written to the chairman of the Maltese Council for Economic and Social Development asking for an urgent meeting in the presence of the Prime Minister. The union wants the social partners to be briefed on what has been agreed with the EU and on the decisions the government has committed itself to take.
The GWU said it was calling for such a meeting because it felt that the way events were developing was hindering the work of the MCESD and was defeating the concept of social dialogue.
