The Malta College for Arts, Science and Technology will start offering more courses as from the coming scholastic year.

Speaking during the launch of the prospectus for 2004-2005, Education Minister Louis Galea said the MCAST has widened the choice of vocational courses in different levels to help students in their career aspirations. He said that as from this year the college would offer new courses in various institutes.

Dr Galea said that in the three years since MCAST has been open, it has grown rapidly and managed to establish itself as a major pillar of post-secondary and tertiary education in Malta.

The minister praised the work done for the college to be accessible to people with a disability. He also stressed his support for the centre for learning support that helps those young people who either do not have qualifications or have not reached the necessary levels in basic subjects.

However, Dr Galea said, more needed to be done for the MCAST to fulfil its aims, particularly in its bid to offer better opportunities to increase the number of people who continued their education. He said the government would continue to develop the college and invest in it so that students would have the best facilities and resources for their training.

Starting from the next scholastic year MCAST will offer a new programme to help students in their holistic and character formation, over and above their formal education.

The minister said the labour market needed not only competent and qualified workers but also ones who had a good vision of life. The new programme offered students extracurricular activities, including sports, community work and cultural activities.

Applications for the MCAST will be received between July 26-30 according to surname.

Three institutes were opened within the MCAST in the last scholastic year. With a staff of more than 370, last year the MCAST offered courses to more than 3,700 students both full time and part time.
