I refer to the article entitled Public land "usurped" for private use (June 30).
It is a sheer example of the arrogance and lack of civic awareness and care that some people still, obviously, cling to after more than a decade of social change and democratic administration on these islands. I fail to see the reasoning behind these sort of actions.
As a tourism journalist whose main objective over these last seven years has been to create a sense of public awareness about the sustainable opportunities we can all benefit from through the tourism industry, this act of sheer vandalism is criminal and deserves the highest condemnation.
I will never tolerate such arrogance and usurpation of public property on these islands and I would like to show my solidarity with Nature Trust for exposing this act of environmental violence. As an ecological lobbying force, Nature Trust needs to follow up this mission and expose any other abuses of this sort.
Unfortunately, most complaints are simply not followed up and we lose all effectiveness by dampening the enthusiasm with which these sort of protests start off. Persistence is our only hope to changing the negative civic behaviour into a more positive and proactive energy.
