The Foundation for International Studies is the international arm of the University of Malta. It is organising English Language Courses 2004 between July 26 and August 20; and between August 23 and September 17. The courses in English for Academic Purposes are intended primarily for students who are attending or applying for a course at University. Participants should have at least an elementary level of English. The courses are suitable for participants who wish to use the English language in realistic situations; develop confidence in using English and to improve their overall ability to communicate in English.
The programme concentrates on: grammar practice activities in a communicative method; vocabulary building; pronunciation work; the key skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The tutors are all very well qualified, and are members of the University lecturing staff.
Participants may request to be prepared for the following examinations: Cambridge examinations First Certificate in English, Certificate in Advanced English, Certificate of Proficiency in English tests normally held in December or IELTS examinations (International English Language Testing Systems).
It is possible to sit for these tests in Malta after the course. Course sessions are held from Mondays to Fridays (except on public holidays) from 9 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. Two special interest classes per week are held in the afternoon. The total number of tuition hours for the course is approximately 90 hours.
The minimum age of participants is 16 years. Registration forms for participants under 18 years of age must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Participants are advised to take out adequate travel and health insurance for their stay in Malta.
