I returned to Malta a couple of weeks ago and passed along The Strand, Gzira and was really impressed by the works that had been done to the first part of the road (just before Manoel Island Bridge).

At the time this demonstrated to me a positive process following Malta's EU membership, thinking that at last something positive had started happening on our beautiful little island. In fact there have been many road works going on since I had been gone.

Two days later I was passing along the same stretch of road and there was a huge trench dug in it. Apparently someone decided that some work needed to be done under the newly laid surface. Why does this always happen?

I have seen this done countless times and it just does not make sense, either financially or for any other reasons one can think of. If a major arterial road is going to be done up should not all those concerned see what needs to be done before the work starts?

I think it is about time the authorities put their foot down on these occurrences as they cost both time and money to the Maltese taxpayer... And, by the way, the trench was filled with concrete and rubble so now there is another pothole in the making in what could have been a European class road.
