The Gozo Citadel is a historical attraction that merits its deserved protection and preservation. The full potential of this landmark may be reached if the underlying archaeological remains are explored scientifically and its historical buildings interpreted and better presented to the public.

Against this backdrop, plans to build a car park on the western part of the Citadel are very worrying. Building activity here may not only destroy underlying archaeological remains, but will probably further threaten the stability of the fortifications.

A car park around the citadel will bring the detrimental effects of air and noise pollution closer to this unique site. It will also impart a negative visual impact to this historic hill and may result in further building activity that may engulf the Citadel in a surrounding urban sprawl.

In view of this, the Grupp Arkeologiku Malti urges the relevant authorities to continue protecting the heritage symbolised by the Citadel's buildings and the surrounding landscape. It appeals to the authorities concerned to look for alternative sites for parking places that will not only improve the current situation within Rabat but also preserve the uniqueness of Gozo's heritage.
