The International Environment Institute of the Foundation for International Studies is organising its annual short intensive course entitled "The Mediterranean Environment: An Overview".

Currently, the Mediterranean littoral includes some of the most densely populated regions of the world. The negative aspect of human civilisation is the deforestation, erosion, urbanisation, pollution of the terrestrial and marine environments, eutrophication and the destruction of wildlife and habitats that threaten the environment.

The Maltese Islands are a microcosm of the region, and amply demonstrate the main themes of the course. These include: man environment relations including human impact, patterns of population geography, Mediterranean geo-politics, socio-economics, the physical setting, resource use, climate, habitats and biota.

The course organised by the FIS between July 5 and 23 is intended mainly for undergraduate students, reading for degrees in the human or natural sciences. The programme consists of lectures, research seminars and fieldwork sessions; current debates on particular topics will be highlighted. Students will be encouraged to research some of the main issues, to develop their analytical skills as well as enhance their ability to approach interdisciplinary issues in a systematic manner.
