At least 40 people were killed when a bus plunged into a river yesterday near the Pakistani capital Islamabad, police and rescue workers said.

An ambulance worker said the bus veered off a bridge after colliding with another vehicle and plunged into the River Soan, south of the capital.

Police said at least 40 people were killed and 10 others were injured in the accident, which occurred at about 0130 GMT.
