A total of 656,446 passengers used the Malta-Gozo ferries in the first three months of this year to cross the channel, a drop of 9,776 passengers, or 1.5 per cent, over the same period in 2003, according to the National Statistics Office.
The total number of passenger vehicles carried by the ferries increased by 22,310 to 195,552, an increase of 12.9 per cent over the corresponding period in 2003.
In the quarter under review, 4,470 trips were operated between Malta and Gozo, an increase of 172, or four per cent, over the same period the year before.
The Ta' Pinu carried 279,234 passengers, or 42.5 per cent of the total passengers in this period. The other two main Gozo Channel ferries, the Gaudos and the Malita, carried 200,412 and 162,060 passengers respectively.
