Francesca Bonnici, 64, was critically injured early yesterday morning in an unusual accident in Abate Rigord Street, Ta' Xbiex.
The police said the incident happened when a Honda Accord car travelling towards Msida crashed into three parked cars. The woman, who had been waiting to cross the road opposite her house, was trapped between two of the cars.
As a passing doctor, Adrian Vassallo, administered first aid, another car hit the parked cars, paused briefly and then kept on going. The particulars were noted and given to the police. The car later hit advertising boards in Msida and was found abandoned at Beltilhazna. It had earlier been stolen from Dingli Street, Sliema, while its owner, architect William Carbonaro, was buying a newspaper.
Magistrate Abigail Lofaro has opened an inquiry.
Dr Joe Micallef was appointed court traffic expert to report on the incident.
Police Inspector Stephen Gatt is heading investigations.
