A voice that must be heard

The Maltese and Gozitan electorate have, no doubt, realised the attitude of our Public Broadcasting Services (which is meant to be our national broadcasting service) and, naturally, all the media of our major political parties in blocking accessibility to the so-called independent candidates, including their newspapers, radio and television. This, therefore, has also included my newly formed political party Alpha, the first European political party in Malta, which is fielding two candidates for the forthcoming European parliamentary elections on Saturday.

This attitude is a categorical admission on the part of the two major political parties that they realise that the electorate is fed up of their hypocrisy, manipulative impositions, mediocre statements, the avarice for power and, above all, their untruths, more untruths and damned untruths!

Alpha has pledged that its two political foundation stones relate to genuineness and sincerity plus the basic notions that relate to peace and neutrality.

There then follow basic and fundamental issues that have been constantly swept under the socio-political carpet of Maltese politics dominated as it is by the ever-watchful eye of the Maltese Catholic Curia, which is Malta's longest- serving "invisible" political party.

Sensing that Alpha would be making important political inroads into the minds of the local electorate once these basic hitherto politically undiscussed issues are brought to the fore, the national media and the media belonging to the two major political parties infringed the European concept of pluralism and put into action the evident "partitocracy" that reigns supreme within our local political culture. Alpha wants to eradicate this flagrant abuse of democracy in our country, apart from the fact that it is a shame that the two major political parties boast of being democratic and pluralistic when in reality and obviously this is not the case.

It became evident that this is not only my feeling for, as I started relating to these serious, democratic infringements in my country, other independent candidates came forward and agreed that they were experiencing the same difficulties. This is a matter, therefore, to which the electorate must respond and they must respond in one way, namely by voting out the "mindless" and "stereotyped" candidates of the Malta Labour Party and the Nationalist Party.

Were it not for the obligatory political broadcast (only one) that my party was allocated by the Broadcasting Authority (broadcast last Monday following the 8 p.m. news bulletin on TVM), Alpha would never even have featured on the national broadcasting network and I demand the immediate resignation of whoever is running PBS.

Within this framework, it is evident that both the Nationalist Party and the Malta Labour Party do not intend to accept the concept of pluralism and cosmopolitanism when it comes to highly charged situations as are circumstances relating to political elections. My party intends to bring this situation to the attention of the competent authorities in the European Parliament and within the European Commission. We will not allow it that our voices are not heard by the people of my country.

Once again our party demands the immediate resignation of those running PBS whom we hold responsible for the electorate's inability to hear and evaluate different opinions emanating from different political platforms in the run-up the Saturday's elections.

In conclusion, I make a genuine and sincere appeal to the people of my country to put aside their different political opinions, to put aside their misconceived political loyalties that relate to the Blue or Red or Green colours and bear in mind that this is an election meant to send the best five candidates to the European Parliament in order to promote the needs of the whole population of Malta and Gozo with particular emphasis on the fundamental rights and requirements of each and every citizen.

That can only be done by voting for Alpha and its two candidates namely John Zammit and the undersigned.

May the genuine and sincere interest of our electorate prevail in a democratic environment which is being very seriously undermined and threatened by the lack of pluralism and the culture of "partitocracy" that our two major political parties have chosen to make their credo!
