A study published by the prestigious Brussels-based Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) identified Dr Simon Busuttil as one of 12 top specialists contesting the European Parliament elections from among all 25 member countries of the European Union.

On Saturday thousands of candidates from all EU countries will be vying for 732 seats in the European Parliament. Dr Busuttil will be standing with the Nationalist Party in Malta.

In a section on "Incoming MEPs to watch" the study lists Dr Busuttil among 12 experts from civil society contesting the election. They include distinguished experts such as the rector of the College of Europe in Poland, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, and Giovanni Berlinguer from Italy.

The study was compiled on the basis of a survey of national experts conducted in all EU countries. The survey was seeking to identify the most notable candidates "that are likely to leave a mark on the next European Parliament".

Only 12 persons out of all 25 countries were selected for the list of societal experts.

In the same section the report also identifies MLP candidate Joseph Muscat in a list of "new talent" standing for the EP elections.
